Nice and quite rare edition of St. Athanasius annotated by various authors among whom Erasmus and Johann Reuchlin. St. Athanasius, Bishop of Alexandria; Confessor and Doctor of the Church; born c. 296; died 2 May, 373. was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known and in his lifetime earned the characteristic title of "Father of Orthodoxy", by which he has been distinguished every since. Engraved printer device of Melchior and Gaspar Treschel on title. Nice ornamental historical letters. Owner copy of Jerom Arraiz (handwritten ex-libris: Hieronymus Arraiz, Ebora 1567 Augusto Vertente), annotated by its hand.The lawyer, theologist and writer, Jerom Arraiz was brother of Amator Arraiz (1530-1600), well known Portuguese writer and moralist. He translated magnificently into Portuguese ' the Moral Dialogues" written in Latin by his brother Jerom. Handwritten title inscribed on the fore edge as it was usual in the 16th century. Minor worm track in the blank bottom of approximate 60 leaves without loss of text.
