Original engraving made by the Flemish engraver Cornelis Galle II (1615 - 1678) after the Flemish painter Jan Ven der Straet (1523 - 1605). This is one from a series of ten (8) on the life of St. John Baptist published by Theodore Galle (1571 - 1633). Here, in his prison; to the right, John, holds a reed cross, converses with two men through the bars of his cell; to the left, in the foreground, soldiers stand guard within the prison; outside, a haloed figure approaches with a crowd. Splendidly raised with contemporary colors. Inscription lettered within the image: 'Ioan. Stradan. invent. / Corn. Galle sculp. / Theodor. Galle excud.' Lettered beneath the image: 'Clausus discipulos ad Iesum carcere mittit / Baptista: accinti mox iter accelerant: / Et referunt visa atq[ue] audita reversi; / Aegros curari numinis auxilio'.
