Engraving after a painting of Petrus-Paulus Rubens (" Paul Rubens pinx" lettered on left lower part of the engraving) preserved at the Statens Museum for Kunst of Copenhagen represents Solomon, dressed with sumptuous clothing and wearing a royal crown. He sat on a throne with legs of lion, holds a sceptre in left hand and with the other hand order to the executioner to splits in two the child that the torturer holds by the foot, in his right hand. One of the two women near the executioner is awaiting the sentence, whereas the other ones view from the back knelt and begs the king not to kill the child. An infant is lengthened dead on the ground. In the background, a soldier keeps the entry of the court, architectural building represented in antique style. The engraver Jacques Chereau (says le Jeune) (1688 - 1776) worked one year in England and was well known as engraver of portraits. Our "Judgement of Salomon" is splendidly raised with gold and contemporary colors. It is assembled in center of a paper framing placed as portico and also raised with gold and contemporay yellow color. French text lettered beneath the image and handwritten Latin text nicely calligraphed under the portico and on back side of sheet.
