A Paris, Chez Iacques Le Roy, à l'Esperance devant le collegede Cambray, 1610, in-8 (23 x 16.5 cm - 9.1 x 6.5 inches), 264 pp., [89] - 139 pp., contemporary full parchment (wears on the lower spine-ends and little lack of parchment on the second side).
First French edition of the 15 books of the Euclid's Elements given by the French Lawyer and Professor of Mathematics in Paris, Didier Dounot (Ligny en Barrois 1574 - 1640). He was in relationship with Descartes and Mersenne and is also author of a treatise of "Confutation de l'invention des longitudes ou de la Mécométrie". Both works are very seldom to find on sale. Our copy is perfectly in conformity with the collation given by F.J. Duarte in his bibliography of "Euclides, Arquimedes, Newton" (p. 58) as well as with the pagination of the copy preserved in the Nationale library in Paris. Max Steck in his Bibliographia Euclideana incorrectly quote 1598 as the date of the first edition (date of a Latin edition given in Paris by Cavellat). The present work is enriched by a title device, head and tail pieces, ornemental engraved letters and by numerous geometrical figures. On the title page, under the date in Roman numeral, there is a ink transcription in Arab numerals. Cfr. Dict. de Biographie Française, t.11, p 692 .
