Magnifique gravure chinoise sur bois - Amazing chinese wood engraving.

s.l., s.d. [circa 1850], 68 x 29 cm or 26.7 x 11.4 inches on rice paper fringed on 4 edges.
Engraving which represent an allegory on the life of emperor HuangDi. All the scene happens on the clouds. The yellow emperor, supreme sovereign of the sky, surrounded by two courtesans who carry as gift the Gilded Lotus and the Pearl of Fire, sat on a throne decorated with dragons. Two maidservants ventilate the sovereign. Five venerables or princes are lying at the legs of the throne and, as the emperor, holds with two hands a jade tablet, symbol of their function. Two warriors with dragons and two banner-bearers surrounded the people. In bottom on the left a young woman takes the gift (a book, perhaps the book of the first Tao, I-Ching) from a humble Chinese on his knees. Huangdi is one of the most important people of the taoist Pantheon. In the upper left part exceeding the cloud, appears probabely the spire roof of a pagoda and an ornamented pillar (Dong or Liang, and Chinese Zhu or Ying)and .
