Parisiis, Apud Ioannem de Roigny , 1552 (colophon : exudebat Benedictus Prevotius...decimoseptimo Calendas Decembris), in-folio (31,5 x 21cm or 12.40 x 8.27 inches), 776 pp. - 19 ff., 17th century full brown calf (some leather restorations on the upper and lower spines ends, 2 compartments and corners), spines raised on 6 bands, 6 compartments decorated with gilt fleurons and fillets, 1 compartment gilt lettered, sprinkled edges.
First edition (second issue) given by Jean Thierry. " valuable recension of the six comedies of Terence. It incorporates the commentaries of 16 leading Renaissance humanists, including Erasmus, Dolet, Barlandus, Glaereanus, Melanchthon, J.C. Scaliger, Bembo, etc. The edition is famous for its 145 charming woodcuts, depicting the actors on the stage at the beginning of each scene ; these cuts are based on the Italian blocks used in Girolamo Scoto's Venise edition of 1545. The series of theatrical illustrations for Terence trace their origin to the Lyon edition of Jean Trechsel, 1493, and it is therefore ironic that we here find Prévost copying an Italian adaptation (Scoto's) of a series that was French in origin" (Cfr. E. K. Schreiber). The inner blank margin of the title page is repared with a paper slip without loss of text. The 5 first leaves and the two last leaves have the margins a little torn. Also some minor brownings on these pages. Worm tracks in the lower white margin of approximately 50 leaves but reaching especially the last leaves but without gravity or loss of text. Otherwise nice copy of this rare book. Cfr. Adams T 341 ; Dibdin - "Of rare occurrance" pp. 470-1 ; Schweiger 1060.
